A Sign in A Small Public Dancehall on The Beara Peninsula

I really liked this little sign i saw in a small dancehall in a tiny colourful village called Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula. The village is impossibly quaint and very colourful and romantic. I guess the sign has seen the Celtic Tiger come and go and the folks down there still dance the nights away oblivious to the rest of the world.

Giant's Causeway

The only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland, the Giant's Causeway is one of the world's truly must-see destinations. Once said to have been built by giants, the 40,000 or so hexagonal columns were actually formed by volcanic eruptions. The legends that surround this area run deep, however, and visitors may get swept up in the myths of massive men and shipwrecks—Girona of the Spanish Armada foundered here in 1588—by walking among the stones.

The Burren

With more than 100 square miles of natural limestone in County Clare offering ancient stone structures, grassy fields, caves, and jagged countryside, the Burren is an explorer's dream. Among the top sites to see while visiting are the Ailwee Caves, a two million year old cave system; the Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen, an ancient stone tomb dating between 2,000 and 2,500 B.C.; Leamaneh Castle, with its 15th-century residential tower and 17th-century fortified home; and Caherconnell Stone Fort, a nearly perfectly preserved structure dating back between 400 and 1200 A.D.

Glendalough

About an hour south of Dublin, Glendalough, or Valley of the Two Lakes, houses the ruins of what was once one of the leading monastic settlements in Ireland. A hermit monk named Saint Kevin founded the monastery before his death in about 618. The settlement flourished for the next 600 years. Today, visitors can explore stone structures, churches, a cathedral, a round tower, and a cemetery.

Cliffs of Moher

One of the most photographed places in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher ascend more than 700 feet above the water and cover nearly five miles. The dramatic cliffs are home to several species of sea birds, including the only mainland colony of Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Choughs. Visitors are welcome to climb the stairs leading to O'Brien's Tower, which provides panoramic views. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the Aran Islands.

Ring of Kerry

Medieval ruins, sandy beaches, lakes, mountains, a lush forest, and a jagged coastline all call the Ring of Kerry home. Part of the Iveragh Peninsula, it's 110 miles of pure beauty. The drive takes place in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland, and begins and ends in the town of Killarney, which makes a good base camp for a trip. It's easy to travel the circuit in one day, but to see some of the sites off the beaten path, such as Valencia Island and the Gaeltacht area around Portmagee, requires a bit more time.

Aran Islands

Located in Galway Bay, the three Aran Islands provide a perfect glimpse into some enduring Irish traditions—Gaelic is still spoken and most people get around by horse and buggy or bike. The largest of the three islands, Inis Mor, is the most well-known and offers the greatest amount of modern-day conveniences. Inis Meain, or the middle island, is the least visited and clings proudly to its Irish cultural tradition. On a clear day, Inis Oirr, or the East Island, provides unparalleled views of the Cliffs of Moher.

Skellig Michael

Just eight miles off the coast of Portmagee and towering more than 700 feet above the water, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, which houses a well-preserved sixth century monastic settlement. Visitors are welcome to walk in the footsteps of the monks who once inhabited this island by climbing the 670 steps leading to the now abandoned beehive-shaped huts. Puffins make the island their home in the late spring, while gannets consume every ledge on the nearby Little Skellig.

Cobh

Once briefly named "Queenstown" in honor of a visit from Queen Victoria in 1849, Cobh reverted to its original name in 1921. Located on the Great Island in Cork Harbor, the town's streets climb a hill crowned by a cathedral overlooking the water. As the embarkation point, including the Titanic's last port of call, to America, Cobh was the last glimpse of Ireland for many people.

Donkey Suckling an Orange

This is probably one of my favourite photograph from the summer that I took. I was on the Blasket Islands off the coast of Kerry in September hiking with a small group and we came across a field of Donkeys. There was about six in all and the one in the photograph took a particular interest in us. I usually carry an apple for the random beasts i encounter when walking .. unfortunately when i searched my bag all i could find was a solitary orange. I didnt really think the donkey would go for it being all hard on the outside and difficult to peel but i was wrong. He got his big chops into it and bit hard until the juice was flowing freely on his big teeth and all over the grass canvas below. In moments he had consumed the fruit, skin, peels, juice and pips ... The funny part was the obvious enjoyment he was getting from having something sooo sweet to suck on .. a big change from his regular diet of poor quality island grass ... his fellow donkeys surely missed out .. so the next time you see a donkey in a field .. sure you know what to give them to produce a sweet smiling photo opportunity !!!! This wonderful piece of mock- art shows that the Irish still have a sense of humour during the challeging times of our economic meltdown. I took this photo while driving through Connemara. Of course the sign is for a wonderful little one horse village called "Recess" but some fanciful artist added an "ion" to it and it becomes an icon to the dreaded R word .. well at least we can laugh about our predicament and no matter what anybody says its not as bad as the last one .. we can still put turf on the fire and afford the odd latte ( which didnt even exist the last time around) .. so the best way to beat the recession is to laugh in the face of it !!!!! shane

We were lucky enough to visit Berlin at a very special time, the 20th anniversary of the falling of the Wall on November 09th 2009. This is one of many photos I took of the dominoes that they lined up on the location of the Wall in the city centre. At around 8pm local time the dominoes began to fall which was extaordinary to watch. I was lucky to be invited to a party in the Marriot Hotel so I got a birds eye view of the falling dominoes. Spring is a nice time to come as it is not too busy and the weather is generally very mild and lots of flowers coming into bloom. Summer is peak tourist season and the hotels are more expensive but the weather is better and there are more people around which can be fun. Autumn is also popular as the weather can be nice and its less expensive, this is a good time to golf in Ireland as it is very mild and settled. We have so many special memories of the beautiful scenery, the breath-taking views at the cliffs of Mohr, the rocky shores of the Burren, the green landscape of the Conemarra, tea at Ashford Castle, Farney Castle and sweater buying, the marvelous horses at the National Stud, the Rock of Cashel, stomping thru the sheep pasture to see the stone ring, sky road, and sooo sooo much more! We won't soon forget!

Orla Kelly, our Sales and Marketing Manager is now the proud mother to Patrick Junior who was born last Wednesday morning at 00.35 am. Weighing in at nearly 10 pounds there is already hope that he wil be a future rugby player for Ireland.

Patrick Junior is the third eldest male in the Kelly family to keep the name and he will undoubtbaly make a great farmer in time.

Recession Has some Possitive Effects on Irish Tourism.

The global recession has hit Ireland as much as anywhere else and the tourism industry are affected as badly as other industries. The big changes to expect in Ireland in 209 are the following.

1. Better rates in Hotels. Particularly five star hotels. Luxury Manor and Castles have dropped rate by as much as 40%. This brings them in line with 4 Star Hotel rates.
2. Less traffic on the small Irish roads. This is great particularly in the honey pots of Killarney, Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula and Burren Region.
3. The locals are going back t the pubs. Believe it or not the recession has increased beer sales. Diageo who owns Guinness reported a 2% increase in beer sales in the last quarter of 2008.
4. Sales, Sales, Sales... everything from crystal, linen, woolens, ceramics, art and crafts are at unbeatable prices at the moment... it’s a good time to stock up on Irish goods.
5. Increased Competition - This means better quality and lower prices all round... the better the competition the better the quality so that’s a bonus too!!!!

Irish Village Embraces Obama as One of Their Own.

PREPARATIONS ARE under way for a big US election night party in the tiny village where Barack Obama can trace his Irish roots.
"Welcome to Obama Country" read two billboards on either side of Moneygall, Co Offaly, which is now hoping for its first US presidential visit.
"We're hopeful that, come Wednesday morning, Brian Cowen will be congratulating US president-elect Barack Obama and inviting him to the town of his ancestors," said local Church of Ireland canon Stephen Neill.
Historians have unearthed records showing Obama's maternal ancestors lived, worked, married and had children in the Moneygall area more than 150 years ago.
Fulmuth Kearney, who is Obama's third great-grandfather, left Moneygall for New York in 1850 to eventually settle in Ohio.
"We've never seen such an interest in any election here ever before," said Henry Healy, who claims to be a distant relation of Hawaiian-born Mr Obama.
Mr Healy, whose family has been in Moneygall since 1750, has traced his family tree to meet the Kearney Obama dynasty.
"In 1760 a Joseph Kearney of the parish of Moneygall married a Sarah Healy also of the parish," he said. "Sarah and Joseph are great-grandparents to Fulmuth Kearney who was Barack's last link to Ireland," said Mr Healy.
Residents of Moneygall, on the N7 Limerick road, are gearing up for a US election party in Ollie Hayes's Bar in the town tomorrow night.
"There's a huge amount of excitement in the area now that election week is finally upon us," said Canon Neill.
"We have Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys playing their song There's No One as Irish as Barack Obama and we hope to be celebrating with early indications from the US as the night unfolds," said Canon Neill.
"Mr Obama said he'll visit the 'little village' in Ireland that has adopted him, so we hope to be able to roll out the red carpet as soon as all the votes are in."

2008 is going to be an exciting year to visit Ireland for many reasons.

Firstly there are so many new luxury, boutique and hip hotels to try out its becoming impossible to keep count of them all. To name a few Lisloughrey Lodge on the grounds of Ashford Castle, the ultra cool Dylan in Dublin City and the groundbreaking Capella in Castlemartyr are all waiting for some hungry and discerning travellers to test their metal.

Personally I am looking forward to visiting new places and writing about them on my website. Ireland is like a crystal ball when it comes to new discoveries... peer deeply into her soul adn you will find always new and exciting things to discover... it can be a tiring job but somebody has to do it. Onto those new or ancient places.. I think the islands around the coast are still very much unexplored.. from Sherkin to Inisboffin to Tory Island these are lands yet untainted by modern society..
